Domain, hosting and SSL: what each one is and whose name it should be in

Three words every website owner hears, but few people know what exactly they are paying for. Here they are, with a shop as the example.

With an example

  • The domain is the shop's address: yourcompany.com. It is paid once a year, usually between €10 and €30.
  • The hosting is the premises where the site lives. It determines how fast the door opens and whether the shop is open on a Sunday too.
  • The SSL certificate is the lock. Because of it the browser shows a padlock instead of “Not secure”. Today it is free and there is no reason to be without one.

The most important thing: whose name

It happens that a company loses its domain because it was registered to a person who no longer works with it. The domain should belong to your company, and the logins should be with you.

How to check

Ask the person who made your website whose name the domain is in and where the hosting is, and ask for the logins. If the answer is slow in coming, write to us. Transferring is easier than it sounds.

How we fix it

In every site we make, the domain and hosting are in your name from day one and you receive all the logins on launch day. We also help with transfers from a previous company.
